Se aborda en este trabajo el estudio de un precioso manuscrito de la Biblioteca Nacional de París, el n.º 2849 de los fondos árabes. Se trata de un manuscrito de origen andalusí que contiene la traducción al árabe de la Materia Medica de Dioscórides, escrito en Siria a principios del siglo XIII, cuyos márgenes están repletos de glosas de naturaleza sinonímica, relativas a los nombres griegos que reciben las plantas descritas por la farmacología griega. Estas glosas son de orígen andalusí, (...) y ofrecen una gran riqueza terminológica que se inscribe en un amplio movimiento árabe, y más concretamente andalusí, de revisión y comentario de la traducción árabe de la Materia Medica. En la primera parte de este estudio se ofrece una presentación general del manuscrito, mostrando su valor para una reedición crítica de la obra, de las glosas que contiene y particularmente de las glosas botánicas andalusíes, insistiendo en su valor sinonímico y su contribución terminológica. En la segunda parte, el autor propone una edición crítica anotada de 44 glosas extraídas de la primera maqala de la obra. (shrink)

Advances in large language models (LLMs) could significantly disrupt political communication. In a large-scale pre-registered experiment (n = 4955), we prompted GPT-4 to generate persuasive messages impersonating the language and beliefs of U.S. political parties—a technique we term “partisan role-play”—and directly compared their persuasiveness to that of human persuasion experts. In aggregate, the persuasive impact of role-playing messages generated by GPT-4 was not significantly different from that of non-role-playing messages. However, the persuasive impact of GPT-4 rivaled, and on some issues (...) exceeded, that of the human experts. Taken together, our findings suggest that—contrary to popular concern—instructing current LLMs to role-play as partisans offers limited persuasive advantage, but also that current LLMs can rival and even exceed the persuasiveness of human experts. These results potentially portend widespread adoption of AI tools by persuasion campaigns, with important implications for the role of AI in politics and democracy. (shrink)

In 1637 a Frenchman named Noël Duret published a book in Paris that referred to the heliocentric Copernican system. In 1660 an Ottoman scholar named Ibrahim Efendi al-Zigetvari Tezkireci translated the book into Arabic. For more than three centuries this manuscript was buried in an Ottoman archive in Istanbul until it resurfaced at the beginning of the 1990s. The discovery of the Arabic text has necessitated a re-evaluation of the history of early modern Arabic natural philosophy, one that takes (...) into account the intellectual context of Ibrahim Efendi and the overarching trends in the world of Sufi mysticism. These trends were reflected in art, literature, philosophy and natural philosophy. Using philological and cultural clues, as well as Ibrahim Efendi's own words, we can attempt deductions about why, how and for what purposes Ibrahim Efendi chose Duret's book for his project. Although extensive research has examined AI integration in education and the UTAUT2 model, few studies have explored ChatGPT adoption with demographic variables in Nigeria and other African contexts. Prior studies have analyzed the impacts UTAUT variables have on students’ behavioral intention and use of ChatGPT, yet little is known about how these relationships differ by demographic profiles. This study addresses that gap by investigating the influence of factors such as age, sex, and programme of study on these associations among Nigerian (...) higher education students. A cross-sectional correlational design was used and data were collected from 8,496 students across various tertiary institutions in Nigeria, using a structured questionnaire. Data were gathered electronically between October 13, 2023, and February 14, 2024. Multigroup analysis within the framework of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS- SEM) was performed. Both measurement and structural model metrics are reported for all subgroups. Findings indicate that performance expectancy is associated with higher intention to use ChatGPT, particularly among males, older students, and those with advanced qualifications, while its relationship with actual use varies across age groups. Effort expectancy and social influence showed differing associations with intention and use depending on demographic characteristics. Facilitating conditions were generally linked to greater actual use, and both hedonic motivation and habit were consistently associated with intention and behavior. These results provide empirical evidence of demographic variations in ChatGPT adoption among Nigerian students and suggest that interventions promoting AI tools should consider these differences. Background In the dynamic landscape of healthcare, nurses play a crucial role as ethical stewards, responsible for whistleblowing, nurse advocacy, and patient safety. Their duties involve ensuring patient well-being through ethical practices and advocacy initiatives. Aim This study investigates the ethical responsibilities of nurses regarding whistleblowing and advocacy in reporting concerns about patient safety. Research Design A cross-sectional study utilized cluster and simple random sampling to gather a representative sample of actively practicing registered nurses. Participants and Research Context The study utilizing a robust sample size determination formula for reliable findings included 96 diverse nurses, predominantly females. Engaged actively in direct patient care across various outpatients clinics. The recruitment process specifically sought individuals with expertise in safety protocols and reporting, contributing to a nuanced understanding of the study’s focus. Ethical Considerations Ethical approval was obtained from the ethics committee of the university and the hospitals involved. Written consent was obtained from the participants. A thorough ethical review was conducted to guarantee participant protection and adherence to ethical principles. Results Surveyed nurses demonstrated positive whistleblowing (Overall Mean Score: 3.58), high advocacy (Overall Mean Score: 12.2), and nuanced ethical decision-making for patient safety (Overall Mean Score: 15.78). Demographic factors, such as nationality and ethical training, significantly impacted whistleblowing intentions, while age, gender, and ethical training correlated with nursing advocacy behavior. Associations with experience and qualification emerged in ethical decision-making. Conclusion The gained insights foster targeted interventions, improving ethical practices, advocacy, and informed decision-making in nursing. As dementia progresses, individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia often lose decision-making capacity, raising complex ethical challenges related to autonomy, surrogate decision-making, dignity, privacy, and justice. This review examines the dilemmas in caring for patients who are no longer capable of providing informed consent, comparing Lebanon’s situation with those of countries across the Global North and South, and proposes practical, culturally grounded recommendations for improvement. To conduct a comprehensive thematic review comparing international practices with Lebanon’s ethical, legal, (...) and institutional approaches to caring for individuals with advanced dementia who lack capacity. A systematic yet flexible review approach, guided by the PRISMA framework, was applied. Studies focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up to April 2025. A total of 121 studies, including 112 international and 9 from Lebanon, met the inclusion criteria. These included qualitative, quantitative, and policy sources. Studies were thematically analyzed for ethical relevance across five themes. Five major ethical themes emerged: surrogate decision-making, patient autonomy, surveillance and technology, legal frameworks, and cultural and economic factors. A clear North–South divide was observed, with countries in the Global North generally relying on formal legal safeguards, advance directives, and structured institutional ethics oversight. In contrast, Lebanon and comparable countries in the Global South often operated with informal, family-centered models, limited legal clarity, and minimal institutional ethics support. Lebanon reflects broader Global South patterns: strong familial caregiving traditions, but inadequate legal and institutional frameworks to ensure dignity-based, ethically consistent care. This review proposes culturally sensitive reforms in law, public education, and ethics infrastructure to better protect the rights and dignity of individuals with advanced dementia. (shrink)

Maqasid al-Shariah based Islamic bioethics is an Islamic bioethics concept which uses the objectives of the Shariah as its approach in analysing and assessing bioethical issues. Then, the evaluation will be analysed from human interest hierarchy, inclusivity, and degree of certainty. Rapid developments in science and technology have resulted in novel discoveries, leading to new questions particularly related to human values and ethics. Every discovery and technology has positive and negative implications and affects human lives either directly or indirectly, involving all walks of life. Bioethical discourse in Malaysia must consider the multiracial and multireligious background of Malaysia and especially the Islamic view as the majority of Malaysians are Muslims and Islam is the religion of the federation. This article discusses several (...) selected bioethical issues in Malaysia by studying the application of maṣlaḥah (the public good) and mafsadah (evil and harms) in Malaysian Islamic rulings (fatwas). This article uses the critical interpretation approach, as this is an ethical, interpretive, textual, and contextual analysis. In a situation when there is a conflict between maṣlaḥah and avoidance of mafsadah, it is preferred to attempt to address both needs. However, if maṣlaḥah and avoidance of mafsadah are mutually exclusive, the decision to choose must be made by weighing (tarjīḥ) and choosing the one which is superior. The maṣlaḥah and mafsadah concepts play vital and significant roles in bioethical discourse to realize human essential interests, namely faith, life, lineage, intellect, and property, thus achieving maqāṣid al-sharīʿah (the ultimate goal of sharia). This concept helps in guiding bioethical discussions, especially in determining the priority between achieving benefits and avoiding harms. The application of this concept will also assist Malaysian authorities in formulating appropriate rulings, especially bioethical issues related to Malaysian Muslims’ lives. (shrink)

Causal finitism, the view that the causal history of any event must be finite, has garnered much philosophical interest recently—especially because of its applicability to the Kalām cosmological argument. The most prominent argument for causal finitism is the Grim Reaper argument, which attempts to show that, if infinite causal histories are possible, then other paradoxical states of affairs must also be possible. However, this style of argument has been criticized on the grounds of (i) relying on controversial modal principles, and (...) (ii) providing a false diagnosis of the paradoxes involved. In this paper, I develop a new kind of Grim Reaper argument immune to these criticisms. I show that, by using insights from the literature on time travel, causal finitists should instead argue that infinite causal histories are problematically inexplicable, as they entail the possibility of unexplained foiling mechanisms. The fruits of this paper are that (i) a novel supporting argument for the Kalām is developed, and (ii) along the way of building this argument, it is shown that the literatures on time travel and causal finitism are deeply and intimately connected. Allowing for the salience of intonation despite its intricate nature, thus its inevitable underrepresentation in course books and teaching practices, this article intends to propose a novel (...) means of intonation instruction as well as its components (i.e., stress, pitch, and juncture) for English language teacher education (henceforth ELTE) contexts within the edusemiotic framework. Promoting the importance of edusemiotic teaching of intonation, this article further aims to add to our understanding of how signs and sign systems can be benefitted in ELTE settings and their potential exploitation across various other disciplines. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there is a relationship between a person's degree of religiousness and corporate social responsibility orientation. A total of 411 managers and 506 students from seven universities were surveyed. The statistical analysis showed that religiousness does influence students' orientation toward the economic, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities of business. It does not, however, have a significant impact upon the managers' attitudes. When the "low religiousness" students and managers were compared, differences were found with (...) respect to the economic, ethical, and philanthropic components of corporate social responsibility. This article extends previous research by investigating the basis for attitudes toward codes of ethics. Specifically, its purposes are threefold. First, to examine business managers' attitudes toward codes of ethics. Second, to ascertain whether gender differences do exist with respect to these attitudes. Third, to provide a benchmark for future studies of attitudes toward codes of ethics. A survey of 286 managers revealed significant differences between the female and male managers with respect to six of the eight variables studied.

Mitochondrial replacement technology (MRT) is an emerging and complex bioethical issue. This treatment aims to eliminate maternal inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) disorders. For Muslims, its introduction affects every aspect of human life, especially the five essential interests of human beings—namely, religion, life, lineage, intellect, and property. Thus, this technology must be assessed using a comprehensive and holistic approach addressing these human essential interests. Consequently, this article analyses and assesses tri-parent baby technology from the perspective of Maqasidic bioethics—that is, Islamic bioethics (...) based on the framework of Maqasid al-Shariah. Using this analysis, this article suggests that tri-parent baby technology should not be permitted for Muslims due to the existence of third-party cell gametes which lead to lineage mixing and due to the uncertain safety of the therapy itself and because the major aim of the technology is to fulfil the affected couples interest to conceive their own genetically healthy child, not to treat and cure mtDNA disorders sufferers. The Successive Addition Argument (SAA) is one of the key arguments espoused by William Lane Craig for the thesis that the universe began to exist. Recently, Malpass, Mind, 131(523), 786–804 (2021) has developed a challenge to the SAA by way of constructing a counterexample that originates in the work of Fred Dretske. In this paper, I show that the Malpass-Dretske counterexample is in fact no counterexample to the argument. Utilizing a distinction between properties of members and properties of collections, I (...) argue that Malpass’ counterexample has no bearing on the soundness of the SAA. Governance of biomedical research in the United States has been characterized by ethical individualism, a mode of reasoning that treats the individual person as the center of moral concern and analysis. However, genomics research raises ethics issues that uniquely affect certain genetically related communities as collectives, not merely as aggregates of individuals. This is especially true of identifiable populations—including Indigenous Peoples—that are often minoritized, socially marginalized, or geographically isolated. We propose an alternative, complementary framework based on the United Nations Declaration (...) on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) (2007), which explicitly recognizes both individual and collective rights. We use the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance as a case study to show how this UNDRIP‐based framework can complement the individual‐focused national standard for research oversight represented by the Belmont principles, thereby better protecting Indigenous Peoples’ rights and interests in genomic data. The primary and secondary sources of Islamic law often assume a binary distinction between ijtihād and taqlīd, ignoring a third level of engagement with the sources, which was conceptualized by some jurists as forming a distinct category. In this article I discuss the evolution of the terms ijtihād, taqlīd, and ittibāʿ, using a conceptual-historical approach. I argue that the use of taqlīd to mean “precedent-following” did not emerge as a technical term until after the time of al-Shāfiʿī. The distinction between (...) precedent-following and verifiable-following did not appear in legal discourse until the time of Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. I also demonstrate that there were three approaches to these terms in legal discourse after the time of Ibn Ḥanbal, with three groups of jurists defining them in ways that advanced their different visions of law-making. I conclude with a discussion of the debate over the meanings of these terms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. (shrink)

Cadavers play an irreplaceable role in anatomy education, offering unique opportunities for hands-on learning and the internalization of ethical values. While large language models (LLMs) are increasingly utilized in medical education, their perspectives on the moral status of cadavers remain underexplored. This study examined the responses of four LLMs—ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Copilot—regarding the concept, significance, and ethical responsibilities toward cadavers. A thematic analysis was conducted based on the AI-generated responses. Three main themes emerged: (1) The Meaning of the Cadaver, (...) where all LLMs preferred the term “donor,” reflecting respect for the body’s human origin and voluntary contribution to science; (2) The Importance of the Cadaver, emphasizing its educational superiority over models and simulations due to realism, anatomical variation, and ethical learning; and (3) Attitudes and Responsibilities, where LLMs expressed moral, ethical, legal, and academic responsibilities, highlighting respect, non-maleficence, and professional conduct. LLMs also acknowledged that donor-related terminology and background knowledge influence learners’ attitudes. Large language models attribute moral value to cadavers based on their human origin and educational role. While not granting full personhood, they support respectful and ethically guided engagement. These findings suggest that LLMs, when integrated into medical education, may reinforce ethical awareness and serve as potential tools for promoting professional identity formation. (shrink)

Background Little is known about the attitudes and practices of intensivists working in Lebanon regarding withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatments. The objectives of the study were to assess the points of view and practices of intensivists in Lebanon along with the opinions of medical, legal and religious leaders regarding withholding withdrawal of life-sustaining treatments in Lebanese intensive care units. Methods A web-based survey was conducted among intensivists working in Lebanese adult ICUs. Interviews were also done with Lebanese medical, legal and (...) religious leaders. Results Of the 229 survey recipients, 83 intensivists completed it, i.e. a response rate of. Most respondents were between 30 and 49 years old, Catholic Christians, anesthesiologists, working in Beirut. Ninety-two percent of them were familiar with the withholding and withdrawal concepts and 80% applied them. Poor prognosis of the acute and chronic disease and futile therapy were the main reasons to consider withholding and withdrawal of treatments. Ninety-five percent of intensivists agreed with the “Principle of Double Effect”. The main withheld therapies were vasopressors, respiratory assistance and CPR. Most of the respondents reported the decision was often to always multidisciplinary, involving the family, and the patient, or his advance directives or his surrogate and the nurses. The interviewees agreed there was a law governing withholding and withdrawal decisions/practices in Lebanon. Christians and Muslim Sunni leaders declared accepting those practices. Conclusion Withholding and withdrawal of LSTs in the ICU are known concepts among intensivists working in Lebanon and are being practiced. Our results could be used to inform and optimize therapeutic limitation in ICUs in the country. (shrink)

Midwives are frequently confronted with ethical dilemmas and require guidance in addressing them. This study investigates Lebanese midwives’ recognition of and perception of ethical dilemmas in clinical practice, examines influencing factors and explores the role of internal policies and ethics committees. Lebanese midwives who graduated between 2017 and 2021 and were registered in the Lebanese Order of Midwives participated in this qualitative and quantitative survey. In September 2022, three online focus groups were held via Zoom with sixteen participants answering validated (...) questions. A quantitative survey was carried out Between October and December 2022. A total of 147 midwives completed the questionnaire. The most frequently reported ethical dilemmas involved disagreements within the team and with patients or families, followed by challenges related to patient autonomy. Among the ethical dilemmas studied, disagreement with patient or family, patient autonomy, and restrictive and hierarchical institutional regulations were found to be significantly associated with the support person sought by the midwives (p = 0.015, p = 0.037, and p = 0.045, respectively). The presence of an ethics committee was significantly associated with reliance on “moral perception and judgement” as a means of coping with ethical challenges (p < 0.001). Lebanese midwives regularly face ethical dilemmas, notably disagreements and patient autonomy issues. The presence of an ethics committee significantly aids their moral judgement, highlighting the need for institutional structures that guide ethical practice. (shrink)

Tri-parent baby technology is an assisted reproductive treatment which aims to minimize or eliminate maternal inheritance of mutated mitochondrial DNA. The technology became popular following the move by the United Kingdom in granting license to a group of researchers from the Newcastle Fertility Centre, Newcastle University to conduct research on the symptoms of defective mtDNA. This technology differs from other assisted reproductive technology because it involves the use of gamete components retrieved from three different individuals. Indirectly, it affects the preservation (...) of lineage which is important from an Islamic point of view. This paper aims to analyze and discuss the implications of the tri-parent technology on preservation of lineage from the perspective of Maqasid al-Shari’ah based the Islamic bioethics. We examine the role of religiosity on the financing activities in both Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesian provinces by using five different measures of religiosity: number of Islamic schools, hajj application, number of Islamic seminary schools, number of Mosques, and number of certified halal products. Based on regression analysis, the results show that both Islamic and conventional banks provide more financing in religious provinces. Religiosity also helps in reducing the volume of non-performing financing. Our the results are still qualitatively (...) valid after taking into account endogeneity issue that emanates from omitted variables (i.e., unobservable beliefs, ideas, and attitudes), and possible reverse causality between religiosity and the total amount of financing at the province level. Rapid development in the area of assisted reproductive technology, has benefited mankind by addressing reproductive problems. However, the emergence of new technologies and techniques raises various issues and discussions among physicians and the masses, especially on issues related to bioethics. Apart from solutions provided using conventional bioethics framework, solutions can also be derived via a complementary framework of bioethics based on the Higher Objectives of the Divine Law in tackling these problems. The results of a survey of 272 practicing accountants and 374 accounting students enrolled in six universities are analyzed. Differences and similarities between the two groups with regard to their attitudes toward corporate social responsibility are examined. The results indicate that the students exhibit greater concern about the ethical and discretionary components of corporate responsibility and a weaker orientation toward economic performance. No significant differences between the two groups were observed with respect to the legal dimension of corporate social responsibility. (...) Eric Mandelbaum has reported some troubles with Bayesianism in cognitive science. He has brought some behavioral data to show that belief updating in humans is fundamentally Bayesian perverse. I argue that the behaviors that he seeks to explain do not undermine Bayesian accounts of belief updating and can instead be explained as idiosyncratic consequences of an appropriately bounded implementation of a Bayesian-normative belief-updating system.

RésuméLa distinction d’Avicenne entre existence externe et existence mentale est fondamentale pour la logique et la philosophie de la tradition islamique. Cet article examine les philosophes qui s’écartent du cadre d’existence externe-mentale d’Avicenne. Ils considèrent que la première ne permet pas de soutenir une analyse générale de la réalité et de la vérité, car l’existence mentale n’est ni nécessaire ni suffisante pour analyser les vérités propositionnelles, c’est-à-dire que les propositions vraies sont vraies indépendamment de «l’existence même des esprits» et des (...) «actes perceptifs des percepteurs». Ils soutiennent que les conditions de vérité d’Avicenne doivent être révisées, car il existe de vraies propositions métathétiques et hypothétiques, c’est-à-dire que les termes sujets n’ont pas besoin d’exister – dans la réalité externe ou dans un esprit – pour que de telles propositions soient vraies. Ce courant de pensée contraire à celui d’Avicenne articule une troisième distinction dans l’analyse de la réalité. Ils se concentrent sur la nature indépendante de l’esprit du contenu propositionnel – en particulier les propositions avec des termes sujets vides, hypothétiques ou impossibles – comme moyen de penser la réalité de manière générale, contrairement à l’accent mis par Avicenne sur le statut existentiel des termes et des essences. Notamment, l’analyse de la réalité indépendante de l’esprit est soutenue par une nouvelle sémantique des propositions catégoriques «réelles» (ḥaqīqī), qui évite les conditions d’existence externes et mentales d’Avicenne. Political violence is known to cause psychological distress. There is a large body of empirical studies drawing correlations between war trauma, torture and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there are few studies on the effects of war-related trauma among Syrian refugees after events following the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings between 2010 and 2012. This study examines the association of PTSD symptoms with torture and other traumatic events among Syrian Kurdish refugees living in Kurdistan Region, Iraq. The experiences and PTSD symptoms among (...) 91 Syrian Kurdish refugees in the Arbat camp in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq were assessed using the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), sections I, IV and V. Results showed that the estimated levels of PTSD symptoms were high: between 35% and 38%. There were no significant gender differences in the occurrence of PTSD symptoms. However, men reported significantly more general traumatic experiences than women. There were significant positive correlations between PTSD symptoms with traumatic events and torture (r =.500, r =.366 respectively). Examining the mental health impact of torture and other traumatic events among refugees has possible implications for organizations managing rehabilitation programs for individuals who have been exposed to traumatic events. RésuméDepuis Ibn Mattawayh et Mānkdīm jusqu'à George Hourani et Marie Bernand, les spécialistes ont montré un intérêt constant pour la théorie de la connaissance d' ʿAbd al-Jabbār, intérêt plus grand encore depuis la parution des textes de Muʿtazilites tardifs comme leKitāb al-Muʿtamad fī Uṣūl al-Dīnd'Ibn al-Malāḥimī, et leKitāb Taṣaffuḥ al-Adillade son maître Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī. Cet article examine la théorie de la connaissance immédiate d' ʿAbd al-Jabbār à partir de sonMughnī, ainsi que de textes écrits par ses élèves ou par (...) des Muʿtazilites tardifs. Est aussi étudié le rapport entre cette théorie et les arguments théologiques d'ʿAbd al-Jabbār. Ce travail est divisé en deux parties: en premier lieu, j'étudie la définition de la connaissance immédiate par ʿAbd al-Jabbār et les réactions de ses successeurs; en second lieu, j'analyse sa conception des types de connaissance immédiate étroitement liés à ses arguments théologiques. Et à partir de là, je montre comment le désaccord à propos du contenu de cette connaissance est à l'origine du débat opposant les théologiens musulmans (mutakallimūn) à propos de la validité de certains arguments théologiques. To achieve accreditation standards and train residents for clinical practice, ACGME placed a lot of emphasis on ethical competence and professionalism. A crucial requirement for enhancing the standard of future medical practice is ethics education. This study sought to identify the requirement for ethics knowledge in clinical training from the perspective of the residents and determine the most effective methods for education. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between March and May 2023. Participants included Lebanese postgraduate medical students, 210 completed (...) a Google Forms survey via WhatsApp. A validated questionnaire adapted from a previous study was used, focusing on demographics, ethical experience, attitudes, educational goals, and training effectiveness. Analyses were performed on IBM SPSS Statistics software (version 26.0) and R software. 210 residents representing a range of specialties participated in the survey. predominantly in internal medicine (54.8%). Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of “Christian” companies in the U.S. These firms declare their belief in, and active pursuit of, the successful merging of biblical principles with business activities. Economic success, hard work, and biblical values are seen as capable of existing together in harmony. While the number of such businesses appears to be growing, there has been a dearth of any scientific study of these companies. No empirical research has been conducted to determine whether these religious (...) values and behaviors have any significant impact on a company’s performance. The present study is designed to partially fill this gap. Specifically, it seeks to determine whether there are differences in long-term performance between self-proclaimed “Christian-based” businesses and their secular counterparts. Data were collected from 312 companies. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), followed by univariate ANOVAs, found significant differences between these two groups of firms on three of the four performance variables that were analyzed. It is a common intuition in scientific practice that positive instances confirm. This confirmation, at least based purely on syntactic considerations, is what Nelson Goodman’s ‘Grue Problem’, and more generally the ‘New Riddle’ of Induction, attempt to defeat. One treatment of the Grue Problem has been made along Bayesian lines, wherein the riddle reduces to a question of probability assignments. In this paper, I consider this so-called Bayesian Grue Problem and evaluate how one might proffer a solution to this problem (...) utilizing what I call a phenomenological approach. As Medicine shifts from a paternalistic practice to a patient-centered approach, the concept of medical informed consent (IC) has evolved to safeguard patient autonomy. However, its current implementation still presents many challenges in clinical practice. We assessed the knowledge and attitudes of the general Lebanese population regarding the IC process as well as their sociodemographic and medical correlates. An anonymous online survey was distributed to the Lebanese population using social media channels. A sample of 500 adults with an average age (...) of 36.2 ± 13.5 years, including 319 females and 181 males, was recruited. Most of the respondents had a university degree (85.8%), reported previous hospital admissions (75.9%) and had signed an IC for surgical procedures (40.7%). Few participants were knowledgeable about IC Lebanese law. Variability in knowledge level was significantly related to gender and a previous hospitalization history. Positive attitudes toward patient autonomy (53.1%) and shared decision-making (57.5%) correlated with older age, female gender, graduate education, and a previous history of signing an IC document. Males were more likely to believe that IC has positive effects on health than females. This is the first study that provides novel findings regarding Lebanese peoples’ awareness of the ethico-legal components of medical IC. (shrink)

The Dayak Iban tribe at Sungai Utik faces various threats of industrialization and land dispossession, which has made the community more marginalized. Despite the marginalization, the Dayak Iban women are trying to empower the community and pass down the cultural heritage beyond generations. To shed light on the struggles and resilience of Dayak Iban women, this study is conducted using a narrative inquiry approach. These data were collected through naturalistic observation and five interviews with Sungai Utik inhabitants, which were then (...) analyzed using the Social Identity approach. This study finds that the Dayak Iban women’s roles extended across several domains: domestic, tradition, education, activism, and economy. Dayak Iban women’s active role in empowering and preserving the community heritages is driven by their cohesiveness and solid social identity. This research evaluates the challenges encountered by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in implementing International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) in emerging markets. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative analysis and qualitative exploration, to uncover the multifaceted nature of these challenges. The research begins by reviewing the existing literature to establish a framework for understanding the factors influencing IFRS adoption in the context of SMEs in emerging markets. Subsequently, primary data were collected through surveys, interviews, and case studies (...) from diverse sample of SMEs operating in emerging markets. The survey data quantitatively capture the prevalent challenges faced by SMEs, while qualitative insights from interviews and case studies enrich the understanding of these challenges within the specific contextual nuances of each market. The findings highlight key challenges including limited awareness and understanding of IFRS, financial constraints, complexities in complying with IFRS requirements, shortage of qualified professionals, and cultural and institutional factors unique to emerging markets. Furthermore, the research underscores the varying degrees of impact of these challenges on SMEs of different sizes, sectors, and geographical locations within emerging markets. Drawing on these insights, the study concluded by offering a synthesized set of strategies tailored to address these hurdles, contributing practical recommendations for stakeholders aiming to support IFRS adoption among SMEs in emerging markets. One of William Lane Craig's key arguments for the finitude of the past is the Successive Addition Argument (SAA). Malpass (2021) has recently developed a novel challenge to the SAA, utilising a thought experiment from the work of Fred Dretske, which is meant to show that it is possible to count to infinity, to argue that there is a counterexample to the SAA's second premise. In this paper, I contend that the Malpass‐Dretske counterexample should not worry advocates of the SAA. (...) First, I argue that one objection Malpass considers—the Potential Infinite Objection—reveals an interesting fact: the SAA's second premise is unnecessarily strong and can be weakened whilst still yielding the same conclusion. Second, I show how another one of the objections considered by Malpass—the Accumulation Objection—is successful, provided some clarification to the SAA's premises. The upshot of both analyses is that we generate two ‘new’ Successive Addition arguments that not only move the dialectic forward, but shed light on deeper assumptions and motivating intuitions concerning the Kalām.
